Bowness High School's Winter Jacket Collection Ends November 6

There is still time to help a Calgary neighbour stay warm this winter. Bowness High School's Students' Union is collecting new and gently used winter jackets for Jacket Racket Calgary until Friday, November 6.

Families can place donations in the collection box on the stage in the school's Fishbowl area. The school says the jackets will help individuals and families during colder weather.

NW Calgary Stories Worth Knowing
Calgary Water Restrictions Begin November 4

Starting Wednesday, November 4, Calgary will enter Stage 4 outdoor water restrictions for approximately four weeks while crews connect the new Bearspaw South Feeder Main.

No outdoor water use is permitted. The City also asks residents to conserve water indoors: run only full loads of laundry and dishes, take shorter showers and flush toilets only when needed.

In Bowness, tie-in work near 33 and 34 Avenues NW and 83 and 89 Streets NW will affect roads, sidewalks and cycling routes. Allow extra time and follow posted detours.

Residents affected by construction can visit the City's community resource centre at Bowness Community Association, 7904 43 Ave NW.

Alberta Announces 2027 Education Property-Tax Changes

Alberta announced on October 30 that it plans to reduce and standardize the education portion of property taxes beginning in 2027, then freeze the new rates for three years.

The proposed residential and farmland rate is $2.65 per $1,000 of assessed value. That covers only the provincial education portion, not the entire property-tax bill.

The province says the change will lower rates overall, although the effect on each household will depend on its assessment and local circumstances. A one-time transition credit is planned where standardization would otherwise raise the rate.

Calgary Police-Record Requests Face Long Delays

A Calgary Journal investigation published October 28 reports substantial delays in the Calgary Police Service's handling of access-to-information requests.

At the September 30 reporting point, roughly 3,500 requests remained outstanding. The backlog may matter to people trying to obtain police records for personal or legal reasons.

Important distinction: This report concerns access-to-information requests. It should not be read as a claim that ordinary employment police information checks face the same delays.

The Rare Morph Economy Hiding in NW Calgary Basements

Half the advice online says snakes are banned in Calgary. — That's wrong, and the truth is more interesting.

Search for "snake laws Calgary" and you'll find sites insisting reptiles are prohibited. — Those lists are describing landlord and condo rules, not municipal law.

Calgary's pet bylaw contains no exotic-species ban.

- The real restrictions sit with Alberta's Wildlife Act, which controls venomous snakes and large constrictors

- not ball pythons.

But legality is only the first question.

- Your lease, your condo bylaw, and your insurer each have their own say, and they can prohibit what the province permits.

It also covers the husbandry mistakes that cost beginners a season, winter power-failure planning for Calgary cold snaps, and how the local pickup market really works.

Your Paycheque Is Being Garnished — Here's How NW Calgary Workers Stop It

Most garnishments can be stopped within days. — A few cannot be stopped at all, and knowing which is which changes everything.

💡 Answer to Trivia Question:
Hawkwood. The Hawkwood archaeological site preserves evidence of human activity dating back approximately 8,250 years.

Filing a consumer proposal or bankruptcy creates an immediate legal stay.

- Your employer must stop the deductions, and that applies even to Canada Revenue Agency debts.

But one category is untouchable.

- Garnishments enforcing child support cannot be stopped by insolvency, and any advice that skips this is incomplete.

Alberta also has an option many people never hear about.

- The Orderly Payment of Debts program consolidates unsecured debt at 5% interest without insolvency.

The full article compares consumer proposals and bankruptcy on cost, timeline, and credit impact

- three years versus six on your record.

It also covers what happens to your RRSP, your tax refund, and your home, plus the exact documents to bring to a trustee consultation.
