Your NW Calgary Yard

Congratulations! not many get to say that they share this as part of your yard.  Here are a couple things happening this week.

Oh by the way, what is happening with your property taxes?  Check out the bottom the page for a little ino that may prove useful to you.

Coffee with a Uniform

Coffee with a Uniform — Fri Sep 11, 10:30–12, The Landing, 7904 43 Ave NW. Free. Bring your question for Calgary Police.

🧠: Which NW community shares a name with a town on England's Lake Windermere? 💡: The Treasure Hunt keeps thousands of usable items out of the landfill each September — and Bowness consistently shows up.

The next Curbside Treasure Hunt in Calgary is scheduled for Saturday, September 12 to Sunday, September 13, 2026.

During this weekend, residents are encouraged to place gently used, reusable items on their curbside marked with a “Free” sign for neighbors to take, helping to reduce waste and keep items out of landfills.

To participate, simply gather items like furniture, books, electronics, and toys, label them clearly, and place them next to the sidewalk. All items must be removed from the curb by 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 13, 2026; any leftover items should be donated to local charities or recycled, as the City will not pick up unclaimed goods.

🍂 YOUR CITADEL WEEK: Sept 8–15 🧶 Stitch & Chat — Tue

Sep 8 (and every Tuesday), 1–4 PM, Citadel Community Hall,

870 Citadel Dr NW. Free. Bring your own project; knitters,

the fastest icebreaker in the room.

🧠 Trivia: What do Citadel and Hawkwood have in common

besides sharing a hillside view? (They both advertise their

programs in the same GNM mail-out — compare notes!)

😄: "Knitting: the art of turning anxiety into mittens."

Zen Garden Music Festival (Sat Sep 12, Waterfront Park on the Bow) from ~$75. Plus the Curbside Treasure Hunt (Sep 12–13) — our curbs count! 🤫

Plus: the Coach Hill Patterson Heights Movie in the Park (Fri Sep 11 evening) is a short drive west,

6️⃣ DALHOUSIE

Steve Poltz with Jed and the Valentine Fri Sep 11, doors 7:30 PM | Dalhousie Community Centre, 5432 Dalhart Rd NW | from $35 The songwriter behind Jewel's "You Were Meant for Me" plays our community hall. Is it bigger than Vancouver's Stanley Park? (Yes — significantly.)  😄: "September: when everyone pretends to be upset that patio season is ending. Nobody means it."

🧠 Trivia: Silver Springs sits beside which river park with calgary's largest beaver activity — Bowmont Park. What river borders it? (The Bow, obviously.) +

NW Calgary Property Taxes - Up Again??

A Lawyer Quoted $12,000. A Varsity Neighbor Did It for the Price of Printer Ink.

A Lawyer Quoted $12,000. A Varsity Neighbour Did It for the Price of Printer Ink.

January brings two things to NW Calgary: snow, and property assessment notices. .

And this year, like every year, thousands of residents will open that envelope, see a number they think is too high, and then do nothing. The deadline passes in late March, and the bill stands for another year.

Here's what stops most people cold: they have no idea what an appeal actually costs, or whether they'd even win. So they either hand over money to the first "tax relief" outfit that promises a guaranteed reduction, or they let the deadline slip while they think it over. Both roads cost money.

This week's feature breaks the whole thing down in plain numbers. Inside, you'll find:

  • The one number you're allowed to appeal (and the one you never can)
  • Real math: what a 10% reduction actually saves on a $350,000 condo versus a $700,000 Edgemont detached
  • The $12,000 lawyer quote that circulated in Calgary's Reddit community, and what a fair fee actually looks like
  • A six-step DIY playbook that worked for a Varsity condo owner who cut $15,000 off his assessment with nothing but printed sales figures
  • The three guarantees to demand in writing from any consultant before you pay a dime
  • Straight answers on the scary stuff: re-inspections, next-year resets, and whether past overpayments come back to you

Five minutes of reading could save you hundreds this year, and every year after.
