Connie Kaldor (QC)

If there are any honours Connie Kaldor CM has not already earned in her glittering career in Canadian music, they’re probably waiting in her mailbox. Order of Canada, Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal, Honorary Doctorate, multiple JUNOs, Lifetime Achievement Award from the Woodstock Folk Festival, the only thing missing is my coveted Nobel for Mediocrity. But if you think that by now she would be resting on her laurels, you’d be wrong. Her prolific studio output in recent years sees her continuing to explore the meaning and mythology of Canadian prairie life on releases like Wide Open Spaces. Blessed with a musically gifted family, including husband Paul Campagne and sons Aleksi and Gabrielle, Connie is a perennial gift that keeps giving to us all. conniekaldor.com

Special Guest: Gabriel Campagne (QC)

Born into Canadian folk music royalty, Gabriel Campagne has forged his own path playing talents he comes by honestly. Steeped in espresso, cabaret culture, back alleys and the ethnic melting pot of Montréal, he studied classical voice at McGill University and writes in both French and English. After fronting the band Les Barricades, he now intersperses his solo career with occasional family gigs. One reviewer summed up his métier as drawing from Randy Newman, Pavarotti and Jacques Brel. gabrielcampagne.com

NW Calgary Surprise Visit

Was this your Back Yard??

Bobcat family pays surprise visit to backyard of Calgary wildlife photographer

Date: September 5, 2026
Source: CP24 / Calgary wildlife coverage

Summary: Janice Anderson in Sandstone captured extraordinary photos when a family of bobcats spent time in her backyard on August 27. The wildlife photographer turned an unexpected encounter into an opportunity of a lifetime. Bobcats have lived in Calgary for over 75 years but are being spotted more frequently in NW neighbourhoods like The Hamptons, Silver Springs, and Edgemont.

Key Fact: Bobcats aren't considered dangerous unless fed. The City of Calgary recommends keeping cats indoors and monitoring small dogs, but notes that co-existence is possible with proper precautions.

Wildlife Safety Tips for NW Calgary Homeowners:

  1. Trim vegetation - Trees, shrubs, and grass should be kept trimmed so there's no shelter for bobcats or coyotes to hide in

  2. Motion detector lighting - Install on walkways and driveways to deter wildlife

  3. Secure outdoor animals - Dogs, rabbits, chickens should be in secure enclosures with strong roofs

  4. Remove fallen fruit - From trees before it attracts rodents (which then attract predators)

  5. Don't leave pet food outside - Even overnight

  6. Keep garbage secured - Use tight-fitting lids, put out only on collection morning

Community Engagement Tips:

  • Call 311 for wildlife sightings (helps with land management decisions)

  • Call 403-297-6423 for non-emergency bobcat concerns (Alberta Fish & Wildlife)

  • Check MyCalgary.com before assuming there are no events—many are posted late

New Hospital Coming To NW Calgary

Major healthcare facility proposed for

Stoney Trail and 14th Street area

Source: Evanston Real Estate Guide / Local

Planning Documents

Summary: The Alberta government has

announced plans for a new hospital similar

to South Health Campus.

Location is proposed for Stoney Trail and

14th Street area, adjacent to Evanston.

This major facility will bring thousands of

healthcare jobs and drive demand for

nearby housing in NW communities.

"New Hospital Coming to NW Calgary: Why

Evanston, Sage Hill, and Kincora Families

Should Pay Attention"

For years, NW Calgary families have driven south to Peter

Lougheed or east to Foothills for specialized care. That's

about to change. Brookfield Residential has set aside land

north of Stoney Trail, east of Centre Street—placing the

future hospital within a 10-minute drive of thousands of NW

households.

WHY THIS MATTERS TO SPECIFIC NW COMMUNITIES:

Community

Distance to Proposed Hospital

Primary Impact

Evanston

5 minutes

Immediate emergency access

Kincora

8 minutes

Pediatric and maternity

 services proximity

Carrington

10 minutes

Planned community receives critical infrastructure

Sage Hill

12 minutes

Access to specialized

surgical care

Nolan Hill

15 minutes

Seniors' healthcare improvements

Arbour Lake West

18 minutes

New development gets

healthcare anchor

TIMELINE THAT AFFECTS YOUR FAMILY:

  • 2026-2027: Planning and design phase ($2M

  • provincial allocation already approved)

  • 2028+: Construction begins (subject to funding

  • confirmation)

  • 2030+: First patients admitted

LOCAL ECONOMY BOOST: This isn't just healthcare—it's

jobs. Thousands of healthcare positions will be created,

meaning many NW Calgary residents could work just

minutes from home. For young families,

that means better work-life balance. For seniors, it means

aging closer to support systems.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO NOW:

  • Attend City of Calgary planning consultations (check

    MyCalgary.com for NW-specific sessions)

  • Provide feedback on hospital services needed (seniors

    care? pediatric ER? trauma center?)

  • Watch for land use zoning changes in Carrington and

    Evanston West

ALBERTA REFERENDUM — YOUR VOTE, YOUR NW CALGARY COMMUNITY'S FUTURE

Oct. 19 Referendum: What Your NW Calgary Neighbours Need to Know Before Casting Their Ballot

This isn't just a provincial headline; it's happening in your backyard, at your local school gymnasium, and will shape the future of the neighbourhoods where you raise your family.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR FAMILY:

According to the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, nearly half of Calgary businesses say they'd consider relocating if separation begins. For NW Calgary homeowners, this could translate to:

  • Property values: Uncertainty periods typically see slower housing markets

  • Employment: Many NW residents work downtown or in business districts affected by investor confidence

  • Local services: Healthcare access, education funding, and transit investment depend on Alberta's fiscal position

WHO IS DOING THE THINKING FOR YOUR FAMILY?

The above is it true? Or could the reverse be true?

  • That is only one side of the potential outcome that may happen. What happens if Alberta listens to Albertans? It was Albertan who built this province. According to Stats Canada Alberta has the highest employment rate in Canada.  Fiscal position-- which province gives most to Canada
  • And there is nothing wrong with helping out your neighbors as long as you get proper respect equal to the rest
  • it could happen that if Alberta stays in Canada, which could be a good thing, but what indication is there  that Alberta will not get slapped around more, simply because according to many, Alberta should not have been given the right to free speech, such as voting on their future, or the same equal opportunities and representation given to other provinces. Instead they should be quiet and continue to pay other provinces and the Federal Government for the privilege of being a province in Canada

YOUR ACTION PLAN:

  1. Register for special ballot by September 25, midnight (Elections Alberta)

  2. Advance polls open October 13 — vote before election day

  3. Find your polling location: Elections Alberta website or call 311

  4. You decide according to what you think is right for you and your family.
  5. Only you can make that decision
  6. Be honest with yourself

Will Your Furnace Survive January? 3 Questions Every NW Calgary Homeowner Should Ask Themselves

Before the Cold Hits: Find Out If Your Heating Is Ready

💡 Answer to Trivia Question:
Calgary has 197 recognized neighbourhoods (called "communities" by the municipal government), plus 42 industrial areas. With NW Calgary having 40+

It's 2 AM in mid-January. Outside, winds howl at -30°C. Inside, your basement goes silent.

The furnace stopped. No warning. No gradual decline. Just cold air creeping through your home.

Sound unlikely?

It happens dozens of times across Arbour Lake, Sage Hill, Dalhousie, and every NW Calgary neighborhood each winter.

The homeowners who avoid this nightmare?

They scheduled fall maintenance before the rush.

Here's what most people miss: Age doesn't determine failure.

A brand-new furnace can fail just as easily as a 20-year-old unit if neglected.

Skip annual service, and you void your warranty. Ignore warning signs, and you risk carbon monoxide exposure.

Three questions to ask yourself today:

  1. When was your last professional furnace tune-up?

  2. Do you have written documentation proving it?

  3. Would you recognize warning signs before a breakdown occurs?

If you're unsure about any of these, you're not alone. Hundreds of NW Calgary families face the same uncertainty every fall.

What community are you in? Are you in Silver Springs (homes from the 1970s), Sage Hill (newer builds), or something in between?

Each age group faces different maintenance priorities.

We're sharing a comprehensive guide to help you navigate furnace maintenance, community-specific considerations, and how to find trusted local service providers—all without the sales pressure.

[Read the full guide here →]

Don't wait until November. Fall maintenance slots fill fast. Book now while $139 specials last (deadline: October 16, 2026).

Stay warm this winter. Your family depends on it.
